Roundup: IRB Nations Cup & IRB Tbilisi Cup

image

A lookback on this year's glorified training tournaments the IRB Nations Cup and the IRB Tbilisi Cup, where Emerging Ireland and Argentina Jaguars took the trophies.

IRB Nations Cup
The IRB press release claimed this was poised to the "best ever Nations Cup", but in reality it was probably one of the worst in recent years, as the Emerging Ireland team routed the field for an easy victory.

None of the national teams involved had full strength squads, and two of them fielded the weaker half of the squad for the game against Emerging Ireland whilst Romania had a younger more reserve ridden side than they fielded in last year's tournament.

Probably the nearest full strength of the national teams was Russia, who to be blunt were an utter disgrace. Okay there were a dozen players missing, around about 10 of an absolute strongest XV, but this wasn't a team with about 6 new caps or something and many of those players would be bench players or 30 man squad members and could be playing in the World Cup's pool of death next year.

These players were good enough to compete better, but simply looked like they did not want to be there, put in a pathetic effort and were unwilling to put their body on the line. The effort was an insult to the pride of the Russian national team, as well as an insult to their opponents. Their might be a background to this performance, but it hasn't come to light yet. They were lucky the game got cancelled at 50 minutes.

Moving on, Russia's new coach Raphaël Saint-André who stepped up from his assistant role bolstered the team Vladimir Ostroushko, the Tsnobiladze brothers, Dimitri Gerasimov and later Yury Kushnarev and Vasily Artemyev. But they still lost both the other games, to a Romanian second string side and a Uruguay side missing more players than they were. As the crucial repechage World Cup qualifying matches probably against Uruguay approach later this year, Russia look in a bad place. Their winning run against Romania seems a long time ago now.

Romania were playing a younger experimental side, but were also unimpressive. Their game against Russia was a candidate for possibly for worst game of the year. It was awful, and the Oaks just scraped home with a dominant scrum late on. The young players played here may not be getting future chances in the proper Romanian team as they are failing to produce many of note who aren't props. They were easily swatted aside in the final by Emerging Ireland, who had a far easier time of it this year than they did last.

Uruguay scored a win over Russia, which is good for them in the run up to the World Cup qualifying playoffs. That game again was a horrifically bad for the neutral though, which in all summed up an utterly forgettable tournament. It produced a couple of the most horrendous games of the year, one of the most pathetic efforts of the year, and an easy romp for the Irish. In addition to this, the whole tournament was played with pretty sparse, muted crowds.

Have any of the teams involved gained anything from this? It's highly debatable, it's hard to see any major significant gains anyway. I guess Lynn Howells, who gave out 7 new caps in the tournament, at least got the chance to evaluate some new players and some of his depth. The question is whether the training style nature of the tournament is a good advert for international rugby

IRB Tbilisi Cup
Onto the other glorified training tournament with weakened lineups. This tournament also produced some low intensity, low standard, low on passion rugby. Worst case being the second half of Georgia against Spain, which was a ghastly 40 minutes of rugby. Just like a couple of the games in Bucharest, it was slow and tedious, just going from scrum to scrum with sides who can't string any phases together.

Unlike the IRB Nations Cup where there was a dominant team, this came down to a close contest between Georgia and Argentina Jaguars which was probably the most interesting game of either tournament. Georgia did not play particularly well, but probably should have won but the Jaguars Lucas Maguire stopped a try with a tap tackle on Tedo Zibzibadze with a clear run to the line, then a couple minutes later Tamaz Mchedlidze was adjudged to have put his toe on the touchline with a clear run to the line. Those two missed tries cost the game as Georgia lost their discipline, with Juan Pablo Socino kicking 7 penalties in a game awash with sin bins.

Coach Milton Haig commented that he was giving opportunities to new players and some didn't take their chance, but did single out Beka Bitsadze and Lasha Malaguradze for praise. There's no reason to worry greatly losing here as it's more about testing new players such as the teenage winger Muraz Giorgadze or giving chances to players who had fallen out of favour like Revaz Gigauri or Sandro Todua, but it will be interesting to see whether any of the reserves get pushed into more important matches.

The other nation involved was Spain, who were sent the most understrength side out of any of the international teams involved in either tournament. They had a massive inexperienced side, with 12 players making their debut over the course of the tournament. The Spanish best game was the opener against Georgia, where their opponents also had their worst game and were turning down many kickable penalties it must be said. However they played much of the same team throughout and perhaps tired, and were more easily thrashed in their next 2 games.

  1. Not only the tournament, the live streaming quality was also poor.
Anyway, good for the Jaguars and Uruguay, they got what they were looking for.
