IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset is in Georgia this weekend ahead of their match with Russia, on his visit he offered some encouragement to the Georgians for progress in the future.
Lapasset met with Georgian prime minister Irakli Gharibashvili and sports minister Levan Kipiani and was satisfied at this week’s news of an increase in state funding to Georgian rugby from 11,800,000 GEL to 33,673,968 GEL, a near tripling.
The Frenchman went onto address several issues on Georgian rugby to the media. He stated that although the IRB has no power in the control of the 6 Nations, he wants to start working on links being built between the 6 Nations and the rest of Europe after the World Cup and in his opinion the Tier 1 nations should not be privatised. He also gave support to the idea of Georgian participation in the Amlin Challenge Cup.
The words are welcome for Georgian rugby, but it should be remembered that he may just be saying things to please his company and that the IRB doesn't control the 6 Nations or club game in Europe. Having said that though, the words of encouragement and support are welcome, and the IRB play a big role in Georgia's future.
In the same press conference, GRU's Giorgi Nizharadze noted that the IRB may consider holding the Junior World Championship in Georgia but there needs to be around 6-7 stadiums and 1 big stadium available.
